Prison of Approval
“When the Applause of Men Becomes Louder Than the Voice of God”

Pastor Tim Rigdon
Sunday, September 6th

Scriptures and Notes

John 12:42–43 (NKJV)
42 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;

43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

It is the prison of other people’s opinions

Many people are not following God, they’re following applause.

If people can control your approval, they can control your direction

When your identity depends on people’s acceptance, you will compromise God’s truth to keep their applause.

I. Chasing Approval
Will Cost You Your Conviction

They traded private conviction
…for public acceptance

The fear of rejection
…can become greater than
…the fear of God

Faith that never speaks is a faith
…controlled by approval

II. The Fear of Man Is a Trap

Proverbs 29:25 NKJV
The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.

One compliment makes your day.

One criticism ruins your week.

III. Saul Lost a Kingdom Chasing Approval

1 Samuel 15:24 NKJV
Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.

IV. Jesus Was Never Controlled
…by Public Opinion

If you live by compliments
… you’ll die by criticism

His identity was settled
…before His ministry began

V. Paul Refused to Become a People-Pleaser

Galatians 1:10 NKJV
For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

VI. God’s Approval Is the Only One That Lasts

The applause of people lasts for a moment
The approval of God lasts forever

God rewards faithfulness, not fame

VII. Stop Performing and Start Belonging

When you know who you are in Christ, you stop chasing validation from everyone else.

Don’t spend your life climbing ladders that lean against the wrong wall.

Live for the audience of One.

God is calling people out of the prison of approval

Let His love become your identity.

Because one ‘Well done’ from Heaven is worth more than a lifetime of applause on earth.
